Khazanah Global Scholarship Interview

First stage

It was like any other scholarship application process. You are required to fill in personal details and also write an essay about how will you contribute back to Malaysia in the future.

Second Stage

You will be informed to log on into a system and answer the questions given within the limited time frame as stated. It is very likely that you will not have enough time to recheck your answers as the time given to answer them is very short. In my opinion, these questions are similar to the questions of reading comprehension where you need to have critical thinking in analyzing the data provided in these questions.

Third Stage

I received an email from Khazanah at approximately 11.40pm (yes, YK team do work late during 'peak period') In the email, I was informed to attend the third stage interview at Corus hotel, Jalan Ampang. I was a bit shocked because there were only 5 people including me when I reached Corus Hotel. After enquiring from the interviewers, they explained to us that they had separated many sessions for those that were selected where each session only consist a maximum of 6 people.

The interview consists of 3 parts, and it started with group discussion. Everyone was given 2 resumes and were required to discuss which person would be more suitable take up the position considering that the company has who to put in what position with company’s limited budget. It was less stressful as there were guidance such as data and instructions. The group discussion went on for 30 minutes with the Khazanah interviewers observing the progress of the discussion.

The next part was the case study personal presentation. We were given a case and were required to present individual presentation about launching a new product. We need to analyse and decide the venue, time, types of advertisement and many more.  At this stage of the interview, everyone was guided as data and instructions were provided. After 30 minutes of preparation, we begun our 15 minutes presentation and ended with a question and answer session.

The last part was regarding a personal interview which I would personally advise those who will be interviewed to stay calm and be yourself. You need to be honest with everything you say as it will not be surprised that these experienced interviewers will know whether or not you were lying. I would also advise to do simple preparation before coming for the interview. I prepared files containing my resume and certificates but it was not used during the interview.

Fourth stage

I received another email a few days later, informing me to attend stage 4 interview at KLCC level 33. Stage 4 was a personal interview with Yayasan Khazanah director Mr Kamarul Bahrein which lasted around 30 minutes. He asked me to introduce myself and some questions regarding my personal background, personal interest and also my curricular activities.

Fifth stage

After two weeks of waiting, I finally received an email from Khazanah. There are 14 of us that were fortunately selected into the final stage. I had fun chatting and getting to know them. The interview session was with the director of Khazanah and it only lasted for 5 to 10 minutes. It was considered a short and brief session.

This is the picture of me with YK director and managers during my pre-departure briefing :)

**All above are just my personal experience and it may be different for other candidates**

  1. What special quality of yours that you think caught their eyes? How you prepare for it? Have you seen any YK's scholar being sponsored for an arts degree?

  2. Hi there! perhaps the first two question i will pm you but for your last question, YK is very flexible with scholars' degree, what they want is to nurture their scholars to realise their potential in order to become Malaysia's future business and industry leaders.

My questions also similar to Chan Hui and Nabaaha. What special quality of yours that you think caught their eyes and how did you prepare it?

    4. To be very honest, I don't know haha because they didn't really share with me about that. I guess everyone has a special quality that is worthy and YK is just looking for someone that is buildable, teachable and has the heart to serve Malaysia at the end of the study =)

I think there is nothing much to prepare for a group interview, just mentally prepare yourself and just be yourself on that day! Be truthful and honest!

      Hope this helps =)

  3. Hi! Congrats there. I'm going for YK's scholarship too. And i've got unconditional offer from Manchester as well. Does it count? I mean during your time, were universities' offer be taken into account (like in interview / application). Did they ever mention about it?

    1. Hi there, there is no definite answer to your question because YK have their own selection system and only YK management team get accessed to it. I would say try your best in the online assessment! Dont worry too much and just be yourself when answering all the personality questions :) Hope it helps.

  6. Hi Belinda,

Just a quick question about stage two.

Do you consider the questions at this stage to be numerical based or a mix of numerical assessments, reading data/graphs comprehension and understanding texts?

If not, could you please specify a little more on the nature of the questions on this stage.

    Best,
    J.

    1. Hi Tan,

Which scholarship programme are you applying for?

    2. Hi xian Wei,in my opinion English is just another language barrier for you to communicate with one another. It is not a must that you need to have super good command of English to be able to get the scholarship, as long as they can understand what you are trying to convey then it should be fine. But bear in mind English is important for now and future so no harm to tune it asap.
      Cheers

  11. Hi belinda, may I know how you answered the question "why should we choose you instead of the other equally qualified scholars?" or a similar question? like what are your qualities that made you stood out among the others?

    1. This is an interesting question. I believe everyone has their own qualities which make us different from everyone else. I think potential scholars should not memorise mediocre and fixed-nice-to-hear answer for this section. Personal interview is a chance for the interviewers to get to know you better and i think we should reveal the true us to the interviewers so that they can judge and decide who is the right one to be chosen from the pool. All the best!

  12. Hello Belinda, I really hope you can reply to this tonight! I've been selected and am going for Khazanah Watan interview tomorrow but I haven't got any offer letters. That is because I have not applied to any of the universities, oblivious that one of the requirements is having an offer letter. Any ideas on what I should do/say? Thank you so much!

    1. Hi ! I guess if the only reason is because you have not reply I think that should be fine? Just tell them the real situation honestly and see what they think about it will do :) but it's better to decide where you want to go asap

    2. Oops sorry I mistaken your applied as replied. I thought you have not replied to offer. ERM I guess you have to discuss sthis with yk during the interview.

  13. Hi Belinda,

I have an interview soon and I hope you can respond to this before tomorrow. From what you saw during your previous interview with YK, what do male potential scholars wear to the interview?

Did they wear a shirt, tie and blazer with slack trousers? Or have you seen successful male candidates wearing only shirt and slack trousers without tie and blazer?

    1. Hi there, I believe attire will not be the sole determinant whether you will get the scholarship or not. But it's important to wear according to the occasion as a respect to the event. So I would recommend you go for formal during the interview as it shows you respect the interview session. By shirt do you mean T-shirt? I really wouldnt recommend that.

    1. Hey there,
You get an email for stage 3? What kind of scholarships you are applying for (watan or global).

    2. This is a little late but you do not have to complete all of the tests in one sitting. That being said, you DO have to sit for the individual tests in one sitting - they are timed tests after all!

      Hope this helps!

    3. Apologies for replying this late because I was travelling. Hope the test was alright for both of you!

  19. Hi . Let's say that i apply the scholarship for foundation. And let's assume that i manage to get the scholarship. After i',ve done my a level , would the scholarship still cover for my degree studies or do we have to apply for another round ? Thank youu

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. from what i aware, we do have to apply for another round because yk doesn't offer directly to you the scholarship for degree or master or postgraduate studies, therefore u need to apply again. literally, it is noticeable that the scholarships offered are very specific to some levels. what i mean is, you can check the list of scholarships offered by yk on their application portal. i hope this helps :)

  20. Hi, I applied for khazanah global and chose MIT as my choice. So does that mean that I need to apply myself to pursue my studies at MIT first and then when I got the offer later, then I can continue with the interviews or the application for the university is all arranged by YK themselves?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. yup you will need to apply to MIT yourself :)
